Packaging That May Require Coding

However, two packages that look similar may use different resins, laminates, varnishes or surface treatments. Their print results can therefore be different.

Surface and Ink Compatibility Must Be Tested

Not every surface is suitable for direct TIJ printing. Ink adhesion can vary according to the packaging material, coating, lamination, surface energy, oil or chemical residue, surface treatment and selected ink formulation.

Gloss-coated cartons, varnished boxes, laminated pouches, low-surface-energy plastics and containers carrying oil, silicone, mould-release agent or product residue may produce weak adhesion, slow drying, smudging or easily removable prints. A solvent-based ink is also not guaranteed to adhere to every coated or non-porous surface.

Can a TIJ printer print on every cosmetic packaging surface?

No. Printability and adhesion depend on the material, coating, contamination, surface treatment and ink formulation. The actual packaging should be tested first.

Can coated or varnished cosmetic boxes be printed directly?

Possibly, but the result cannot be assumed. Coatings may reduce ink adhesion or extend drying time, so the actual box must be tested.

Can oily bottles or containers be printed?
