Food and beverage businesses often need to print manufacturing dates, expiry dates, batch numbers and other variable information. A handheld thermal inkjet (TIJ) printer may be useful for short runs, multiple packing areas or products that are difficult to move to a fixed coding station.

Direct printing or labels?

Neither method is automatically better for every application. Direct printing can reduce manual label handling, while labels may still be suitable when packaging cannot accept ink or when pre-approved artwork is required. Compare the full workflow, consumable cost, print position and production volume.

Test the actual packaging

Ink performance depends on the substrate, coating, surface cleanliness, moisture, temperature and handling conditions. Plastic, foil, glass and coated packaging can behave differently even when they look similar. A solvent-based cartridge does not guarantee adhesion, water resistance or permanence on every surface. Test the customer’s actual production sample and allow the print to dry before evaluating rub and handling resistance.

• Text, date, counter, barcode or QR-code requirements
• Code readability after packing, storage and transport
• Operator training and cartridge care

Printing a date or code does not by itself establish regulatory compliance. The business remains responsible for confirming its required information, format, legibility and records.
