CIJ vs TIJ Printers in Malaysia: A Practical Application and Cost Comparison

Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) and Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) are different coding technologies. Neither is universally better. The appropriate choice depends on line speed, production hours, print distance, substrate, message requirements, operating environment, maintenance resources and total cost over the expected service period.
How the technologies differ
CIJ circulates ink through a pressurised system and prints without touching the product. It is commonly evaluated for continuous, fast-moving lines, small codes and products where greater print distance or irregular movement must be considered.
TIJ uses a replaceable cartridge that normally contains the ink supply and printhead. It can provide clear text, logos and supported barcodes or QR codes, with relatively simple message changeovers. The printhead must normally remain close to and correctly aligned with the surface.

Do not compare purchase price alone
A useful total-cost comparison should record equipment and installation, mounting and sensors, ink and other fluids, cartridges, cleaning materials, planned service, operator time, expected waste, spares and the cost of production interruptions. Use the customer's real print coverage and annual output rather than a generic savings percentage.
Material and ink testing
Porous carton, coated paper, plastic, metal, glass and oily or treated parts behave differently. No CIJ or TIJ ink should be assumed to adhere to every surface. Test drying time, handling, rubbing, moisture exposure and code readability on the actual production material.
Maintenance and workplace considerations
TIJ can reduce some routine fluid-system maintenance, but it is not maintenance-free and cannot guarantee zero downtime. CIJ fluid use, odour, ventilation and handling requirements depend on the selected ink and Safety Data Sheet. Customers should review the documentation and workplace controls for the specific product rather than treating an entire technology as safe or unsafe.
