Choosing a TIJ coding solution in Malaysia should start with the application, not a promise of zero maintenance or automatic savings. This guide explains how to evaluate BENTSAI equipment against your packaging, workflow, data requirements and operating costs.

1. Define the job before selecting a model

• Actual print surface, including coating, texture, colour and cleanliness.
• Required text, dates, batch references, logos or machine-readable codes.
• Print dimensions and available flat or supported print area.
• Items per shift, changeovers and whether goods are stationary or on a conveyor.
• Handling, storage and exposure conditions after printing.

A sample of the finished packaging is more useful than a material name alone. A coated carton can behave differently from uncoated cardboard, and one plastic grade may not accept the same ink as another.

2. Understand the benefits and limits of TIJ

Thermal inkjet uses small heating elements to eject ink droplets on demand. Cartridge-based designs with integrated printheads can simplify printhead replacement. They still require appropriate storage, capping, nozzle care and equipment checks.

Handheld models can bring printing to stationary items. Inline equipment may suit a controlled conveyor process. Neither arrangement is automatically better: test operator access, repeatability, supported print gap, triggering and output at the required resolution.

3. Verify ink and hardware compatibility

Confirm the exact model, cartridge type, chip and firmware before purchase. Physical fit alone is not sufficient. Use a water-based vs solvent ink sample test to evaluate drying and adhesion on the actual print area.

Do not assume that a dry print is waterproof, permanent or resistant to chemicals. Test the conditions relevant to your operation. Ask PTS for available product documents for the proposed equipment and ink.

4. Assess total cost using your own trial

Compare costs over the same period and production volume. Include equipment, mounting and accessories, compatible cartridges, operator time, training, routine care, rejected prints and any required software or integration.

Observed ink cost per accepted print = cartridge cost allocated to the trial divided by accepted prints produced. A supplier's estimated yield should state the code layout, coverage and settings. Actual yield can differ because of cleaning, idle periods and rejected prints.

Calculate potential savings against your current process using measured figures. Do not treat a claimed payback period or percentage saving as guaranteed.

5. Separate coding from traceability

A printer applies a code. Traceability also needs accurate records, data ownership and procedures linking the code to the item or batch. 6. Agree an acceptance test and support scope

1. Print the actual code on representative production samples.
2. Run the intended manual or conveyor workflow, including stops and restarts.
3. Check readability, drying, adhesion and any required scanning.
4. Record settings, cartridge details, accepted samples and observed output.
5. Confirm training, available consumables, lead times and written warranty terms before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher DPI guarantee readable barcodes?

No. Code dimensions, contrast, ink spread, surface and movement also matter. Test with the intended reader and use formal verification where required by the customer.

Does buying TIJ ensure regulatory compliance?

Can PTS recommend a machine from a photograph alone?
