Smart coding starts with the correct information, a suitable printer and a repeatable checking process. Thermal inkjet (TIJ) can be considered for dates, batch references and other identification, but a printed code alone does not create a traceability system.

What does TIJ do?

TIJ is a drop-on-demand technology: small heating elements create bubbles that eject ink droplets through nozzles. In cartridge-based systems with an integrated printhead, replacing the cartridge also replaces that printhead. Cartridge storage, nozzle care and equipment checks are still required.

Match the ink to the actual print area

Water-based ink is commonly considered for absorbent surfaces such as uncoated cartons. Solvent-based ink may suit selected non-absorbent materials. Coatings, oil, moisture and texture can change the result. Drying time and adhesion must be tested separately; neither ink type is suitable for every surface. Choose handheld or inline operation

Handheld printing may suit stationary items, small batches or workstations where an operator controls each print. Inline printing requires a suitable mounting arrangement, consistent product presentation and the correct triggering setup. Confirm the exact model's supported operating mode, accessories, print gap and speed at the intended resolution. Do not apply one model's battery life, weight or speed to an entire product family.

A five-step smart coding workflow

1. Approve the data: Identify who supplies and approves batch references, dates and other fields. Verify date rules before printing.
2. Control the template: Use an identifiable template version. Check field positions, code dimensions and any required clear space.
3. Confirm supported data handling: Counters, date functions, file import and external connections depend on the exact printer and software. Test your required format rather than assuming database or ERP integration.
4. Check the first sample: Compare printed text with the approved record. Scan any barcode or QR code using the intended reader and verify the decoded information or destination.
5. Record and recheck: Retain a sample or record, check after changeovers and cartridge changes, and define how incorrect prints are held and corrected.

Print quality is more than a DPI figure

Readability depends on code size, contrast, ink spread, nozzle condition, movement and substrate. The available print height is not the same as a guaranteed number of readable text lines. A successful scan on one phone is not a formal barcode quality assessment. Agree the acceptance criteria with the customer and use appropriate verification where required.

Frequently asked questions

Does a QR code automatically provide traceability?

No. The code must connect to correct, maintained records and a defined process. Access permissions, record retention and system ownership need separate planning.

Is TIJ maintenance-free?

No. Follow cartridge instructions for capping, storage and nozzle cleaning, and check the printer, rollers, sensors or mounting arrangement as applicable.

Will the printer ensure labelling compliance?

What should I prepare for a demonstration?

Bring the actual material, intended text or code, print dimensions, workflow speed and a sample data file if needed. Agree the test and acceptance criteria before selecting the setup.
