Schools, colleges, universities, laboratories and training centres may need to identify computers, projectors, tools, furniture, storage containers and other assets. Direct inkjet marking can be evaluated as one option, but it does not replace every label and should not be assumed permanent on every material.

This article discusses a possible workflow only. It does not claim that any named or unnamed Malaysian institution has adopted BENTSAI equipment.

Labels or direct marking?

Labels can be useful when information must be replaced, when a tamper-evident material is required or when the asset surface should not be printed. Direct marking may reduce label application steps and can place text or a supported QR code directly on a suitable non-critical surface. Some institutions may use both methods.

Check the asset before printing

1. Ownership and approval: obtain permission from the asset owner or responsible department.
2. Print zone: avoid screens, vents, ports, controls, serial plates, safety information, seals and areas that may affect warranty or resale.
3. Material: identify plastic type, coating, paint, metal finish, glass, wood or rubberised treatment.
4. Cleaning method: record the detergents, alcohol wipes, heat, moisture and handling the mark may encounter.
5. Required life: decide whether the code must be temporary, removable or durable for a defined period.

Suggested data workflow

An asset code should come from the institution's approved register or asset-management system. The printer reproduces the supplied identifier; it does not create or validate the ownership record.

1. Approve the asset ID and human-readable text.
2. If using QR, confirm the destination and access permissions.
3. Keep confidential information out of the visible code unless authorised.
4. Prepare the supported message or database record.
5. Test-print, scan and compare it with the source record.
6. Record the approved printer, cartridge, settings and print zone.

Run a controlled sample test

Use the actual asset material or an approved sample with the same coating. Check alignment, legibility, drying time and repeated scanning. After a suitable curing period, carry out only the cleaning, rubbing, moisture or temperature tests required by the institution.

Do not claim resistance to alcohol, autoclaving, chemicals, heat, condensation or abrasion unless the exact ink-and-surface combination has passed a documented test. Printing directly on equipment can also affect appearance, warranty or servicing, so customers must approve the location and method.

Maintenance and operating expectations

Cartridge-based TIJ printers can be portable and relatively low-maintenance, but they are not maintenance-free. Nozzle wiping, capping, cartridge storage, battery charging, roller or fixture care and operator training may still be required. Battery duration and uptime vary with use and conditions.
