There is no single industrial batch coding printer that is best for every production line. The right choice depends on the approved message, packaging material, print area, line speed, product handling and operating environment.

Start with the application, not the model

Before comparing printers, define what must be printed: expiry or manufacturing dates, batch and lot numbers, serial numbers, barcodes, QR codes, logos or other variable data. Confirm the required print height, readable viewing distance and available print zone.

Seven checks before selecting a coding system

1. Material and surface: identify whether the surface is porous or non-porous and whether it is coated, laminated, oily, dusty, wet or uneven.
2. Ink compatibility: water-based and solvent-based cartridges serve different materials. Adhesion, drying time and resistance must be tested on the customer's actual sample.
3. Production method: decide whether printing will be handheld, semi-automatic or integrated with a conveyor.
4. Line conditions: record actual speed, product spacing, movement, vibration and the distance between the printhead and surface.
5. Data workflow: confirm whether operators need fixed messages, counters, database records, barcodes or QR codes, and how the approved data will reach the printer.
6. Changeovers: consider the number of SKUs, message approval process and operator training required.
7. Support and consumables: confirm cartridge availability, documentation, warranty scope and local technical assistance.

TIJ maintenance expectations

Cartridge-based TIJ systems can reduce routine mechanical maintenance compared with some coding technologies, but they are not maintenance-free. Operators may still need to wipe the nozzle correctly, cap and store cartridges, maintain sensors and brackets, check print distance and replace consumables.

Why an actual sample test matters

A successful test should use the customer's real packaging, approved artwork or code, expected line conditions and intended ink. Check readability, barcode or QR scan performance, drying time, adhesion after handling and the required resistance after a suitable curing period.

Customers remain responsible for confirming that their final code content, placement, readability and documentation meet their own product, customer and regulatory requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can one ink print reliably on every material?

No. Coatings, surface treatment, contamination and environmental conditions affect adhesion. Test the proposed ink on the actual sample.

Is the largest printer always the better choice?

No. Select only the print height, heads, controls and integration needed for the application. An oversized system may add unnecessary cost and complexity.

Can a TIJ printer guarantee zero downtime?

No coding system can guarantee zero downtime. Good cartridge handling, installation, operator training, spare consumables and preventive checks help reduce avoidable interruptions.
