The B85 can also be useful when several lines of information must be printed within one wide marking area. Actual layout and quality depend on the print file and setup.

2. When a smaller printer may be more suitable

A larger print area is not always necessary. Consider a smaller handheld model when:

• the required code is only 12.7 mm or 25.4 mm high;
• the available print area is narrow;
• the operator needs a lighter or more compact unit;
• the content is limited to a small date, batch number or QR code;
• the budget and expected print volume do not justify a wider system.

3. Material and coating checks

The material name alone does not prove compatibility. Two cartons or plastic parts may have different coatings, surface treatments or contamination. Oil, dust, moisture, curvature and texture can affect drying, adhesion and code sharpness.

Ink selection should therefore be based on the actual sample. Water-based and solvent-based formulations serve different material conditions, but no single cartridge should be assumed to work on all porous and non-porous surfaces.

4. Prepare the print file correctly

Before testing, confirm:

• maximum required print height and width;
• text size, number of lines and spacing;
• static and variable information;
• barcode or QR-code dimensions and required scan distance;
• logo quality and approved artwork;
• printing direction and operator movement.

For a wide-format print, file design and operator movement can affect alignment. Keep the first test simple, then add complexity after the basic print is repeatable.

5. Sample-test checklist

1. Use the customer’s actual object or packaging sample.
2. Identify coatings, treatment, oil, moisture and surface texture.
3. Select a potentially suitable ink based on available information.
4. Set a practical printing distance and guide method.
5. Print the intended file several times, not only once.
6. Check readability, alignment, drying and rub resistance.
7. Scan every barcode or QR-code sample if scanning is required.
8. Repeat after expected storage or handling where relevant.
9. Document the approved file, ink, settings and procedure.

A successful sample test applies only to the tested combination and conditions. It does not guarantee the same result on different materials or in a different environment.

6. Handheld operation and production planning

Handheld results depend partly on operator technique. A stable starting point, consistent movement and suitable roller or positioning support can improve repeatability. For high-volume or automated production, assess whether a fixed inline arrangement or another coding method would be more appropriate.
