Quick answer: Direct inkjet marking can support identification of selected automotive and hardware components, but it does not automatically create complete traceability or compliance with an industry standard. The code must be connected to accurate records, and the printer, ink and component surface must be tested together.

1. Define the identification objective

Start by deciding whether the mark is intended for an internal part number, batch or lot number, serial number, date, barcode, QR code, inspection status or assembly reference. Confirm who will read or scan it, at what stage, and how the data connects to the company’s records.

A printed identifier only supports traceability when it is unique where required, accurately generated, legible and linked to a maintained database or document trail.

2. Inspect the actual component surface

Steel, aluminium, painted metal, plastic housings, PVC, rubber and coated parts can behave differently. Oil, release agent, dust, oxidation, texture, curvature and surface treatment may affect drying and adhesion. A material name alone is not enough to select an ink.

Customers should provide an actual production sample, including its normal coating and cleaning condition. Do not assume that a successful result on one component applies to another supplier, colour or production batch.

3. Choose print size and data format

The BENTSAI BT-HH6205BL has a stated maximum print height of 12.7 mm, while the BENTSAI BT-HH6210BL has a stated maximum print height of 25.4 mm. The suitable model depends on available marking space, required character size, number of lines and scanning needs.

Small barcodes and QR codes require careful testing. Scan performance depends on module size, contrast, surface, code content, printing movement and the scanner being used.

4. Handheld or inline operation?

Handheld printing may suit lower-volume, oversized, irregular or difficult-to-position components. Inline printing may be more repeatable when components can be presented consistently to a fixed printhead and sensor. Neither approach is universally better.

5. Sample-test workflow

1. Provide the actual component and approved print file.
2. Record the material, coating, cleaning method and operating environment.
3. Select a potentially compatible ink using available technical information.
4. Print multiple samples using the intended operating method.
5. Check readability, alignment, drying and rub resistance.
6. Scan every barcode or QR-code sample where scanning is required.
7. Expose samples to expected handling, storage or cleaning conditions.
8. Obtain the customer’s internal approval before production use.
9. Document the approved printer, ink, file, settings and procedure.

A successful sample test applies only to the tested combination and conditions. It does not prove permanent adhesion, chemical resistance or suitability throughout the component’s full service life.

6. Standards and customer requirements

Automotive and industrial customers may have contractual, quality-system or marking requirements. PTS can help assess printing feasibility and provide product information available to us, but we do not certify a customer’s compliance with IATF 16949 or any other standard.
